Ches Smith’s ECM leader debut, The Bell, features dynamic chamber music compositions written for masterful improvisers Craig Taborn and Mat Maneri. Smith infuses seductively narcotic writing with a mixture of brooding melody and rich texture. The inspired playing by all three on an album gradually builds in intensity.
