Foreword by Lotfi Mansouri

In his foreword to this new volume, Lotfi Mansouri states: “Having been the product of an Opera Workshop (U.C.L.A.) and involved in the creation of young artist programs with opera companies in Europe and North America, I have rarely seen as instructive and practical a guide for developing young artists for a career in opera as Teaching Opera. The talented and dedicated team of Kathryn Cathcart and Willene Gunn has put the culmination of a more than 20-year collaboration of practical experiences in the classroom into this book. I had already seen the results of their work while I was General Director of the San Francisco Opera and had the opportunity to work with several graduates of the Opera Program of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. I realized then that these young singers had received a solid foundation on which to build a career… Teaching Opera should prove invaluable to a great many people in the opera world… introductory chapters, which will delineate a mode of instruction that should be helpful to anyone involved with the preparation and development of aspiring young opera singers, assisting them in the development of their voice, body movement, mind and personality – all the tools to help make them complete artists for a future career in opera.”
