Composer’s Note:

Twilight is the final work in The Cosmic Engine, a multimedia opera created in collaboration with video-artist Rosemary Williams and clarinetist Pat O’Keefe and premiered at The Southern Theater on May 30 – 31, 2008 in Minneapolis. I revised the composition in 2013, creating a new electroacoustic part and rewriting it for its present instrumentation. The text is by Walt Whitman, written late in his life.

The soft voluptuous opiate shades,

The sun just gone, the eager light dispell’d”(I too will soon be

gone, dispell’d,)

A haze”nirwana”rest and night”oblivion.

from Leaves of Grass, by Walt Whitman
