Cavatina, written in 1985 for clarinet and piano, is a short and lyrical piece composed for performances by the University of Illinois Contemporary Chamber Players. The title comes from the arias that were used to introduce characters in operas by Verdi, Donizetti, and others. Direct and brief, they are efficient vehicles for advancing the drama.
